Crowne Plaza. Newcastle.

After a run of mediocre to poor hotel stays I wasn’t sure what to expect of my Saturday night stay at the Crowne Plaza in Newcastle’s Stephenson Quarter.  I’d actually stayed at this hotel around a year ago and was pleasantly surprised by it back then so was hoping that their standards had been maintained.

It’s a very convenient location both to the railway station, but also to nearly all of the gay bars in the city – they’re a short stumble away.

I was given a room on the 4th floor overlooking the railway station.  It was a good size and had everything you’d expect.

The wifi was free and fast an the bed comfortable.  There were lots of plug sockets and USB ports either side of the bed.  There was also a little sleep aid kit, but figured that I probably wouldn’t need it!  There was also a couple of complementary bottles of water in the room too.

The bathroom was also not bad, with a separate shower cubicle and bath (although the shower was a tad on the small side).  There were plenty of towels and the whole place seemed spotless.

Newcastle itself is actually a really fun night with some very cheap places for drinks (if you’re used to London prices).  As I was out with some friends we started at the Eagle which was ok, and the migrated to Blake’s around midnight.  Blake’s was fun, the drinks were cheap (and terrible) and was a real mix of people.  From straight lads to students and everything else in between.  By 01.30 it was already way past my bed time so it was a short stumble to bed.

In the morning, breakfast was pretty good and included in my rate.  There was pretty much everything you could expect at a hotel like this, and all the cooked to order food was also included.  I decided to have a cheese and ham omelette.  This was huge, although a little bit dried out so only ate half of it.

The hotel also has a really large spa complex on the lower ground level.  There’s a small pool, steam room and extensive spa facilities.  The ladies down there were absolutely lovely (as was everyone at the hotel).  After breakfast we headed down to use the facilities to detox a little from the previous evening.

Overall, I was actually quietly impressed with the Crowne Plaza.  It has everything you could want from a 4* hotel being modern, clean, with friendly helpful staff and great facilities.  Definitely recommended and would have no hesitation in going back.
