Normally here at the Ginger Travel Guru, I’m not one to regurgitate press releases by airlines. I like to pride myself (no pun intended) at taking an independent (sometimes cynical) look at things.
However Virgin Atlantic seem to be doing something pretty special for World Pride in New York City next year.
- Virgin Atlantic and Virgin Holidays have teamed up with NYC & Company and the Alliance for Downtown New York to stage the UK’s first-ever “Pride Flight” – bringing hundreds of British holiday-makers to New York City for World Pride next year
- The one-off flight will be hosted by Tituss Burgess – star of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt – and feature a load of special live performances
They go on to say:
Staffed entirely by LGBT+ pilots and cabin crew, the flight will be a true celebration of queer culture 38,000ft above the Atlantic. It will feature a tonne of special on-board entertainment including on board DJ, Drag-Queen Bingo, Judy Garland singalong, inter-seat speed dating and special in-flight entertainment.
Somewhat amusingly, they’ve given it the flight number VS069.
Of course the first thing I did was go online to see if it was bookable with miles. Unfortunately, the flight is zero’d out in all available selling classes meaning that it will indeed be a private experience.
In addition, they’ve done a lovely promo video below.
If you do want to book on the flight, the spiel from Virgin is as follows:
A portion of ticket sales from the flight will be donated to The Attitude Magazine Foundation to advance community Pride initiatives here in the UK – and further fundraising and raffles will take place on-board.
The flight departs from London Heathrow on Friday June 28th 2019, flying direct to New York City’s Newark airport with a flexible return date on offer.
Holiday-makers can buy an Economy Light flight-only ticket from £380 by calling Virgin Atlantic on 0344 209 7777, or indulge in a full three night package from £699 by calling Virgin Holidays on 0344 557 3859.
Virgin Holidays offers more than 100 accommodation options within New York City, although recommends staying within the Downtown neighbourhood to be able to explore all of New York easily across World Pride weekend.
I have to say, I’m normally quite cynical about things like this, but I actually think this is a great initiative that Virgin are doing.
